One Small Card, One Big Compatibility Question

Two 256GB microSDXC cards solve different storage jobs. The SanDisk Ultra is a U1/A1 option for everyday expansion; the Amazon Basics High Speed carries U3/A2 and a faster advertised ceiling that needs a particular reader.

We compare products every day and update our recommendations when a better option is verified.

30-second verdict

Choose the SanDisk Ultra for a compatible phone, tablet or older console when the device only needs U1-class storage and the checked £38.99 offer suits you. Choose Amazon Basics High Speed when your camera's manual calls for U3 or its faster writing specification is useful; the checked new offer was £48.99. Neither card is microSD Express, so do not buy either as Nintendo Switch 2 game expansion. Both exact UK offers were in stock, sold and dispatched by Amazon, with Add to basket, Buy Now and London SW1A 1AA delivery on 24 September 2026. Check your device's capacity and speed-class requirements before ordering.

Ultra microSDXC 256GB with SD adapter

Standard · SDSQUAC-256G-GN6MN · ASIN B0B7NV73PJ
£38.99 new offer checked 24 Sep 2026

The selected 256GB Ultra card is microSDXC UHS-I with Class 10, U1 and A1 markings. SanDisk rates 256GB Ultra reads up to 150MB/s with compatible hardware and says writing is lower; this is an offload ceiling, not a 150MB/s recording promise. An SD adapter is included. A matching Standard / 256GB review describes photos and Full HD video use and calls speed adequate for that owner's setup. SanDisk lists a ten-year limited warranty for the family. The exact new UK offer was sold and dispatched by Amazon.

High Speed microSDXC 256GB with adapter

High Speed · one pack · ASIN B0DB54VLNC
£48.99 new offer checked 24 Sep 2026

The selected High Speed 256GB card is microSDXC UHS-I marked U3 and A2. Its listing gives up to 200MB/s read and 150MB/s write under controlled conditions, but says the 200MB/s read ceiling requires the separately sold Amazon Basics USB-C reader B0DB4YQPL1. An ordinary slot can be slower. A matching UK review reports use with a Lumix TZ90 for 4K video; another camera's exact mode still needs its own card guidance. The Amazon listing explicitly says this card is not compatible with Nintendo Switch 2. The exact new UK offer was sold and dispatched by Amazon.

What we researched

We compared two exact new UK 256GB microSDXC offers from different manufacturers. The selected SanDisk listing showed 5K+ bought in the past month and 46,415 reviews; Amazon Basics showed 100+ and 2,893. These changing listing signals are not market share or a universal popularity ranking, and review totals can mix options. The real choice is the device's required card class: SanDisk Ultra is U1/A1 while Amazon Basics High Speed is U3/A2. Both checked new offers were sold and dispatched by Amazon; neither is the microSD Express format required for Nintendo Switch 2 game storage.

Key findings

The device manual outranks the biggest number

The SD Association defines U1 and U3 as different minimum-write classes. A camera or recording mode that specifies U3 should guide the choice before either card's maximum read claim. The owner's Lumix TZ90 example does not verify every camera or bitrate.

High

A fast card cannot fix a slower reader

SanDisk conditions its 150MB/s read ceiling on compatible hardware. Amazon Basics states that 200MB/s needs its specific separately sold USB-C reader B0DB4YQPL1. Neither number promises the same transfer speed from a camera slot or ordinary reader.

High

Console compatibility changes with the slot

Both offers are conventional microSDXC UHS-I cards. The Amazon Basics listing expressly excludes Nintendo Switch 2; that console's game expansion uses microSD Express, so check the exact console model rather than assuming every microSD card works.

Matching-option owner review
Amazon UK · SanDisk Standard 256GB owner feedbackThe five-star verified UK review R3C219Y539J5CA, dated 20 August 2025 and labelled Standard / microSD / 256 GB, describes using the card for photos and Full HD video and calls transfer speed adequate rather than exceptional. Its mention of an action camera does not establish compatibility with every recording mode.

Amazon UK · Amazon Basics High Speed 256GB owner feedbackThe five-star verified UK review R1JUZWX7HEC98D, dated 29 May 2026 and labelled High Speed / 256 GB, reports using the card in a Panasonic Lumix TZ90 for 4K video. This is an owner's specific setup, not a benchmark or a guarantee for other cameras.
Manufacturer product page
SanDisk UK · Ultra microSD family specificationsThe Ultra microSD family page lists A1, a ten-year limited warranty, SD adapter, and an up-to-150MB/s read ceiling for 256GB capacity that requires compatible reader hardware; writes are lower. The UK page currently resolves to a 64GB SKU and omits the checked UK 256GB suffix from its model list, so the exact offer identity comes from the Amazon ASIN and selected model, not that official page.
Standards body
SD Association · Speed Class standardDefines U1 and U3 as distinct UHS speed classes and explains that class symbols indicate minimum sequential writing under specified conditions, while host bus mode and matching device requirements matter. Used to interpret the U1 versus U3 choice without equating advertised peak read speed with recording suitability.
Method
On 24 September 2026 we screened Amazon UK 256GB microSD results, then opened the two exact detail pages for London SW1A 1AA. Both selected new offers were in stock, sold and dispatched by Amazon with Add to basket and Buy Now. We read one five-star verified UK review labelled with the exact selected style and capacity for each product. SanDisk's official Ultra family page and the SD Association class guide informed the speed-class explanation; Amazon's own listing supplied Amazon Basics product specifications. The SanDisk UK page currently resolves to a 64GB SKU and does not list the exact UK 256GB suffix, so we rely on the Amazon ASIN and selected model for offer identity. We did not benchmark speed or test long-term reliability. Purchase labels are listing-level signals, not market share; rating totals may combine options. Selection was independent of affiliate availability.
