Fast Backups Sound Great Until Your Storage Fills Up

Both hold 1TB. Samsung's T7 fits an ordinary 10Gbps USB-C workflow; Sandisk's new Extreme adds a tougher shell and a 20Gbps speed ceiling your computer may not reach.

30-second verdict

Choose the Samsung T7 if your laptop has a 10Gbps USB 3.2 Gen 2 port and you mainly move backups or project files between desks. Choose the new Sandisk Extreme if its IP65 rating and three-meter drop claim suit outdoor work, and you have a 20Gbps USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 connection that can use its higher advertised read ceiling. Sandisk's Amazon title says USB-C 3.2 Gen 2, while its 2026 maker data sheet specifies Gen 2x2 for this new model; check your computer port before paying for the speed. The listed maxima are not measured transfer results. Both exact new 1TB US offers were in stock, sold and shipped by Amazon.com, Prime eligible and had working purchase controls for Wilmington 19804.

T7 Portable SSD

Titan Gray · 1TB · MU-PC1T0T/AM · ASIN B0874XN4D8
$229.99 new offer checked 24 Sep 2026

The selected T7 is a 1TB USB 3.2 Gen 2 drive rated up to 1,050 MB/s read and 1,000 MB/s write. Its metal enclosure has a drop claim in the Amazon listing, but no IP water/dust rating is used here. Optional password-based AES hardware encryption helps protect files when set up; it is not a backup. Matching Titan Gray / 1TB feedback mentions the compact body and a straightforward support call when setting up Mac Time Machine. The exact new offer was sold and shipped by Amazon.com with Prime delivery.

Extreme Portable SSD V3

New Model · Black · 1TB · SDSSDE70-1T00-G25 · ASIN B0GMWYYRQL
$269.97 new offer checked 24 Sep 2026

The exact new model's maker data sheet specifies USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 at 20Gbps and up to 2,000 MB/s read; write speed is lower and real speed depends on host and workload. The Amazon title's simpler Gen 2 wording is inconsistent, so the model number and maker sheet matter. Sandisk also rates IP65 and up to three-meter drop protection, with a five-year limited warranty; clean and dry the drive before use. Password-based AES protection needs software. Matching New Model / 1TB / Black feedback mentions the compact body and remaining capacity, without testing durability. The exact new offer was sold and shipped by Amazon.com with Prime delivery.

What we researched

The Amazon US search mixed actual external SSDs with HDDs and thumb drives. We selected two exact 1TB portable SSD offers from different makers, both sold and shipped new by Amazon.com. The T7 listing showed 3K+ bought in the past month and 21,219 global ratings; the new Extreme listing showed 3K+ and 169. These are changing listing signals, not market share, and ratings can include grouped capacities or styles. The practical question is whether the computer can use a 20Gbps Gen 2x2 link and whether added dust, water and drop ratings matter to the places the drive travels.

Key findings

A fast SSD still waits for its port

The Sandisk model's 2,000 MB/s headline assumes a suitable 20Gbps connection and favorable conditions. A computer limited to 10Gbps will not gain that interface headroom. For routine backups on such a computer, the T7's 10Gbps class may be a more sensible fit.

High

The Sandisk listing and maker disagree on the USB label

The selected Amazon title says USB-C 3.2 Gen 2; Sandisk's 2026 data sheet says Gen 2x2 for this new model. We matched the selected Amazon model number SDSSDE70-1T00-G25 to the maker's new Extreme family and use the maker sheet for the interface. Verify your exact checkout model if the listing changes.

High

Water resistance and encryption solve different risks

The Extreme's IP65 rating can matter outdoors, but does not replace keeping another copy of important files. Both products advertise optional password-based protection; enable the required software before relying on it. A single portable drive is not a complete backup plan.
