Your Files Need a Plan, Not Just a Faster Drive

Both hold 1 TB. Decide whether a much lighter backup drive or the speed of a compatible 20 Gbps workflow matters more.

We compare products every day and update our recommendations when a better option is verified.

30-second verdict

Choose the 2026 Sandisk Portable Drive if a compact USB-C backup for everyday file moves is the job. It weighs about 32 g and is rated up to 600 MB/s read, with lower write speed. Choose the Samsung T9 if you regularly move large projects and your computer and cable support USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 at 20 Gbps; that is the condition for its up-to-2,000 MB/s read/write claim. At 122 g it is heavier, but adds optional hardware password protection and a five-year limited warranty versus Sandisk's three years. Neither rated speed is an independent benchmark, and one portable drive is not a complete backup. Both exact Canadian offers were new, in stock, sold and shipped by Amazon.ca, with active purchase buttons and delivery to Balzac T4B 2T3.

This 31.7 g USB-C drive is rated up to 600 MB/s read. Sandisk says write speed is lower and transfers depend on the host and workload. Its 2026 sheet lists up-to-2 m drop protection and a three-year limited warranty, with no IP water/dust rating. Matching 1 TB global feedback mentions simple storage and the small body. The Canadian offer was sold and shipped by Amazon.ca.

T9 Portable SSD 1 TB

Black · MU-PG1T0B/AM · ASIN B0CHFSWM2P
C$389.99 new checked 24 Sep 2026

Samsung rates T9 up to 2,000 MB/s sequential read and write with USB 3.2 Gen 2x2, a suitable cable and UASP. A slower host reduces that headroom. At 122 g it is heavier than Sandisk, but includes USB-C-to-C and USB-C-to-A cables, optional AES-256 password protection and a five-year limited warranty. Matching Canadian 1 TB feedback mentions moving video projects and the textured body. The new offer was sold and shipped by Amazon.ca.

What we researched

The Canadian 1 TB search mixed real portable SSDs with mechanical HDDs and internal drives. These two selected new offers are different manufacturers and were sold and shipped by Amazon.ca. Sandisk showed 100+ bought in the past month and 25 global ratings; T9 showed 200+ and 2,754 global ratings. Those are listing transaction and feedback signals, not market share, and rating pools can span capacities. The practical difference is a light 600 MB/s-class drive versus a heavier 20 Gbps-class drive whose rated ceiling depends on your computer.

Key findings

The port decides whether T9 speed is useful

Samsung's top number requires 20 Gbps Gen 2x2 and UASP. A laptop with only 10 Gbps USB-C cannot use the full rated interface headroom.

High

The two speed labels measure different things

Sandisk's 600 MB/s claim is read speed and its maker says writes are lower. Samsung rates sequential read and write under stated host conditions. Neither claim predicts every file-copy job.

High

A longer warranty is not a second backup

Both warranties have conditions and cannot recover accidentally deleted or corrupted files. Keep another copy of important data and set up password software deliberately if needed.

Method
On 24 September 2026 we screened Best Sellers-sorted Amazon.ca 1 TB external SSD search results, excluding HDDs, internal drives and mismatched offers. We checked both exact selected ASINs, models, new stock, Amazon.ca seller and shipper, Balzac T4B 2T3 delivery and active purchase controls. We cross-checked Sandisk's 2026 SDSSDE10 sheet and Samsung Canada's exact T9 model page, and read one five-star matching 1 TB verified review on each listing. The Sandisk review was from a US buyer on the global listing and is identified as such. We did not benchmark speed or test drop resistance. Purchase labels are listing signals, not national rankings.
